Introducing the Wildfire Science & Technology Commons

We believe that avoiding devastating wildfires requires urgent, innovative, and collaborative solutions. The Wildfire Commons is a bold new initiative designed to accelerate technological innovations for wildfire management and mitigation. We are building a community platform around open data, cutting-edge science, AI, and shared knowledge.

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to bring people together to break down the barriers that currently exist between wildfire-related data, models, and tools. Today these resources are siloed, which slows down innovation. We have the opportunity to create a seamless, smart platform to enable solutions that revolutionize how we understand, respond to, and prevent wildfires.

Together, we can protect lives, property, and ecosystems from the ever-growing threat of wildfires.

Upcoming Events

Wildfire Risk Modeling Exercise

at - at (Pacific)

Participate in the first ever, dedicated Wildfire Risk Modeling Exercise!

Call to Action - Wildfire can be beneficial to some ecosystems in certain conditions however, we're currently experiencing an increasing trend in wildfires destroying thousands of buildings, claiming lives, and resulting in negative economic impacts with annual costs estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Yet we struggle to consistently measure, understand, and predict fire risk - the very foundation of mitigation. In response, there is an influx of science and technology developments in wildfire hazard exposure, risk quantification, and prediction.

Now more than ever, we need to understand the unique strengths of wildfire risk models, and identify how models can be ensembled to achieve the most precise intelligence on fire risk.

  • Location: Exercise Conduct is Virtual.
    • A post-exercise hotwash workshop will be conducted as a hybrid event, exact date and location for the hot wash are to be determined.
  • When: Exercise Conduct runs from March 16 through May 15, 2026.
    • Participating organizations engage in exercise conduct on their own schedules during this timeframe.
    • Deadline to register is March 9, 2026.
  • Who: All organizations that have developed a wildfire risk model.

Register by March 9, 2026 via the button below.

Wildfire Commons Webinar: What are Case Study Communities

at - at (Pacific)

Join us to explore how the Wildfire Commons is supporting the acceleration of technological innovations for wildfire management and mitigation through collaborative case studies. We'll highlight the 4D Fuels Case Study, and preview our upcoming Digital Twin Case Study launching this spring. Learn how these community-driven initiatives are accelerating data sharing, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and building the foundation for next-generation wildfire management tools.

Shrubwise Data Challenge

at - at (Pacific)

In this data challenge, participants will design and implement techniques to map shrub distributions (including both cover and height) at high spatial resolution (1 m). Your goal is to build a machine learning pipeline that accurately characterizes shrub ecosystems by integrating multiple geospatial datasets.

Register by February 20, 2026 to receive priority support by going to Shrubwise Data Challenge on https://fireforge.wildfirecommons.org/
